GEONETCast is an information delivery system that uses satellite broadcast technology, similar to satellite TV, to transfer GEOSS resources (Earth Observation data, maps and other information derived from such data, and training material) straight to a desktop computer via a small satellite dish. No Internet connection is required.
Currently, GEONETCast provides near-global access through collaborations among the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA).
As a key piece of GEOSS Architecture, GEONETCast helps GEO build and expand the ability of institutions and individuals to use Earth observations for better-informed decision making and to save precious resources.
Thousands of receiving stations have been set up all over the world to allow thousands of users to receive GEOSS data.
